BIRTHSTONES
When choosing a birthstone either for yourself or another person, it is important to take into consideration the colour and properties of each stone in relation to the individual, rather than to be a slave to any particular instruction given in any one system. Most crystal historians agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron. A ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.
No definitive system exists as to which stones correspond to which star sign; there are several systems in use. Some systems use the calendar months to define which stones are most compatible for each star sign and others use the exact astrological dates.
